Put On Your Big Boots

“When you see someone putting on their Big Boots, you can be pretty sure that an Adventure is going to happen.”

A. A. Milne Winnie the Pooh

For many of us, this is the time of year that we reflect on what we have accomplished thus far. We think about our mistakes and we begin to plan for all that we have to do when we return from our time off. While we try to be as present as we can with our families and friends, there is still a part of us that is always thinking about ways we can improve. That is simply who we are.

I am certain that many of us will read books, articles and blogs over the course of the next two weeks. We will participate in various Twitter chats because they are fun and because that is how we learn, from each other. We will make lists, schedules and plans that will begin in January. As leaders, there are many little things that we are responsible for that we are always trying to improve upon. And improving upon these “little things” can often have a big impact on those around us. Keep doing this. Never stop trying to get better at the little things.

But, now is the time to put on your Big Boots. So today, tonight or tomorrow, start to plan something totally awesome for the coming year. Think of something that, if accomplished, would be a really a really big deal. Something that if achieved would cause you to look back and say, “Wow, I really did that?”

Here’s the only problem. You may fail. But, guess what? You might not.

So put on your Big Boots and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. There is nothing wrong with accomplishing a lot of little things. But wouldn’t it be nice to look back a year from now and realize that in addition to achieving the little things, you actually accomplished something that you previously thought was out of reach?

“All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.”

T. E. Lawrence
